Plan Your Trip

Whether you are heading out on a day trip or going for a weeks-long expedition, careful planning will stand you in good stead.

There are many good resources to help you. Take advantage of a pre-planned trip, such as our Featured Trip. Or plan your own. Resources include trail maps published by local watershed groups, guides to boating on the bay, and websites, including this one and the National Park Service's Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail website.

Once you are on the trail remember to practice the "leave no trace" philosophy.

Much of the trail runs along waterways where the shorelines are private. Respect these properties and identify your campgrounds using the materials supplied by state agencies and local water trail groups.
